Jirō Taniguchi was born in 1947 in Tottori, Japan, into a modest family. Passionate about drawing from an early age, he left his hometown at the age of eighteen for Kyoto and later Tokyo to pursue a career as a manga artist. After working as an assistant to Kyûta Ishikawa and Kazuo Kamimura, he gradually developed his own distinctive style. Strongly influenced by European comics, he went on to create major works such as Au temps de Botchan (The Times of Botchan) and The Walking Man. His international reputation soared with A Distant Neighborhood and The Summit of the Gods, both of which received prestigious awards at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. A leading figure of contemplative manga, he passed away in 2017, leaving several works unfinished.
